Pro Formula Mazda reclass
#36032 from John Harkenrider III · Not recommended · Minutes (2024-05 Fastrack)
Thank you for your letter. The Club Racing Board does not recommend this change. SCCA cannot guarantee
that cars from a discontinued pro series will have their own U.S. Majors class or will be fully competitive in
a Majors class in which other cars have been built to a specific "formula." In FA, the Pro Formula Mazda
(PFM) spec line in Table 2 no longer requires PFMs to comply with the rule set from their former pro series.
The PFM's sealed-engine requirement was removed effective January 1, 2018, and owners are now
permitted to port their engines and run wider wheels. PFMs also benefit from certain accommodations
that are unavailable to other cars in FA, including allowances for a higher-mounted rear wing, wider
bodywork behind the front wheels, and a 6-speed transmission. PFM owners are free, alternatively, to

bring their cars into compliance with the general FA rules and use one of the approved engines from FA
Table 1. While a PFM running under the spec line may not be able to compete head-to-head with some
cars in FA, the PFM's performance level far exceeds the performance level of every car classified in the FX
class, and it would therefore be inappropriate to reclassify PFMs in FX. In addition, PFMs do not participate
at a level nationwide that would justify creating a separate U.S. Majors class. PFMs accounted for just 25
entries in FA during the most recent U.S. Majors season (19.8% of the total FA entries in 2023) and
achieved an average entry of only 0.71 cars per event, which is far below the participation level expected
of a U.S. Majors class. PFM owners are welcome to consider concepts such as organizing an unofficial
championship within FA and/or recognizing competitors' performance by awarding PFM trophies and using
custom backdrops for PFM podium pictures.
