Allow Penske T4 shock in SMX
#39588 from Marc Cefalo · Not recommended · Minutes (2026-02 Fastrack)
SMAC does not recommend this change at this time. SMAC believes that keeping all competitors on the same (not similar) equipment is the best path moving forward for overall success and growth of the class. Penske does offer a path to take the T4 non-adjustable shock and convert it to a sealed SMX adjustable shock for those wishing to convert.

SMX Racers, The Spec MX-5 (SMX) class was founded in 2019 on four key pillars: Reliability, Techability, Affordability, and Fun to Drive. Now in its second year as an SCCA national class, SMX continues to thrive. However, we have observed increasing engine development that begins to drift from these core pillars. To address this, SMX is evaluating the possibility of transitioning to Roush as a single-source engine provider, beginning with the 2027 Hoosier Super Tour season. Continued development and innovation can unintentionally add cost, reduce reliability, and create performance disparities among competitors. These factors can compromise the long-term health of the class. Moving to a single-source engine supplier

helps ensure parity while staying true to the founding principles of Spec MX-5. Under the proposed Roush single-source model, all engines would be run-in on an SAE-certified dyno cell with break-in oil, and additional power pulls would be conducted to verify output and ensure class compliance. Roush currently maintains an SAE- certified dyno tolerance of approximately 1.5%, which keeps the field as competitive as possible while managing costs. A 2-3 year price freeze and some version of an exchange/rebuild program would also be part of this plan. We value your input on this important decision. Please share your comments and connection to SMX (Driver, Crew, build in progress, etc). Thank you for your continued support of the Spec MX-5 class.

SMX AiM Data Penalties
#38241 from Paul Gauzens · Not recommended · Minutes (2025-06 Fastrack)
Thank you for your letter. SMAC, AIM and the SCCA technical staff are working on a better long-term technology solution to the data submission requirement for SMX. Submitting data to AIM/SCCA has significant advantages to the competitors and was one of the key founding principles of the class. While in some rare circumstances it can be challenging to submit your data on time the alternative is more invasive mechanical technical inspections that will take more effort and time than uploading a data file. This data has also been extremely helpful for AIM to proactively communicate with competitors on vehicle health and performance issues they may not have known about. Technical compliance through data is something imperative to the future success of the class. The most recent rule change

effective 6/1/25 calls for data to be submitted within 60 minutes from checkered flag time which we believe is reasonable while we sort out some new technology that will either allow the competitor to download and submit data from an app, or SCCA actively pulls the data for the competitor wirelessly in impound.

30 Minute Time Limit for SMX Data Submission
#38051 from Jim Ebben · No action required · Minutes (2025-05 Fastrack)
Thank you for your letter. Please see response to letter #38039. A key part of this series is the immediate virtual tech checks that occur based on the competitor’s data submissions. All HST events require a 30-minute mandatory impound all during which the data can be downloaded and submitted. There is contracted AIM staff sitting by to run automated technical compliance checks in a very short period of time once all of the competitors data files have been submitted. Moving the data submission timeframe outside of the 30 or 40 minute window would then require more invasive mechanical tech during impounds which is far more invasive and troublesome than finding a way to get a laptop to impound. The series is working with AIM to test the ability to pull the competitors data automatically in impound for the competitor for future implementation.
Battery Location and Size Clarification
#37985 from Ryan Gutile · No action required · Minutes (2025-05 Fastrack)
Thank you for your letter. The rule is adequate as written. SMAC does not make compliance determinations, that is reserved for the tech staff. To be clear every race is a new event, and cars are not deemed compliant because of past events. Saying the car was deemed legal by the Spec MX-5 Challenge series has zero bearing on the current SCCA rule book.

SMX Wiring Harness Change in GCR
#36682 from Joe Rainey · Not recommended · Minutes (2024-10 Fastrack)
Thank you for your letter. Per section 9.1.7.1.3.j removal of excess wiring is allowed. Mazda is also working on a race harness for the SMX class but is not currently available. Opening up the class to create custom wiring harnesses is not within class philosophy and would create difficulties for the tech staff and opportunities for noncompliance. There are currently used harnesses available on the open market that would solve this problem while the race harness continues through the development process.

#35677 from James Ebben · Not recommended · Minutes (2024-03 Fastrack)
Thank you for your letter. GCR section 9.3 specifies which classes require fire systems versus fire bottles. A change in fire system requirements would need to be submitted through the letter system, reviewed and recommended by the GCR Advisory Committee, voted on by the CRB, and ultimately sent to the BoD for approval. The recent change to the SMX section of the GCR was made so that it does not conflict with the general fire system language in Section 9.3.
